The event location Deichgraf by Dr. Thompson‘s was brought back to life in 2023 and is located in the historic building of Haus Deichgraf right in the center of Düsseldorf’s green lung.
The application for the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show) in 1987 marked the start of the large-scale redevelopment of the Volksgarten and the design of the Südpark. At the heart and on the longitudinal axis connecting the two parks, the construction of Haus Deichgraf began at about the same time. With its mirrored roof visible from afar, the Deichgraf still dominates the parks today. In the first years, Haus Deichgraf was operated by the well-established Günnewig hotel group as a restaurant and conference location. It was later run by various lessees.
After several years of vacancy, the Leonardo Group and Seifenfabrik Dr. Thompson’s have aimed to reopen the location after six months of remodeling and restoration and to bring this little green paradise back to life.

History
The history of Deichgraf by Dr. Thompson‘s dates back to the 1980s. In 1987, the Bundesgartenschau (Federal Garden Show) took place in Düsseldorf. The original motto “A garden for all of us,” still holds true today.
What used to be more of a landfill with junkyards, garden plots and industrial wastelands was transformed into Düsseldorf’s green lung within just a few years at a cost of 55 million marks. In 1987, the Bundesgartenschau attracted seven million visitors.
The Südpark area includes 16 themed gardens, which start directly in front of Haus Deichgraf. Tulips, dahlias, pansies, roses, ornamental leeks and peonies bloom here, depending on the season.
On the other side, below the spacious terrace of Haus Deichgraf, there is a large water zone with a bird protection island. Here, even rare kingfishers and stock doves feel at home. The dike, which gave the building its name, was built 500 years ago to protect residents from the high waters of the river Rhine.
Volksgarten and Südpark are at the very top of the hit list of the city’s most popular parks, attracting locals of all ages with various recreational activities.
In 2023, the building was acquired by the current owners who transformed it into a state-of-the-art event location with historical roots. Combining modern design components with historical charm, Deichgraf by Dr. Thompson´s can be used for all sorts of events, both private and commercial. The venue can accommodate groups of up to 199 people. Our experienced staff takes care of all the details and provides an unforgettable experience for our guests.

The kitchen team at Deichgraf by Dr. Thompson‘s is constantly creating innovative dishes and combining them with tried and tested classics. Finger food, 3-, 4- and 5-course menus, individual buffets, fork food offerings, food market concepts and daytime catering – our catering offers everything your heart desires. All categories are also available in an “organic-regional” version, using only organic and regional products.

From digestives such as Hierbas, 15 different types of gin to 16-year-old whiskey and numerous international vodka specialties – our professionally trained bar staff will find the perfect long drink and cocktail for every guest, of course also in a non-alcoholic version!

Plan your outdoor event without stress, because in the unwelcome event of rain you are on the safe side with us. Our winter garden can be electrically closed, and the indoor area provides protection from bad weather. We also have other interesting options with sufficient space for groups of up to 350 people, for which we hold a special permit.
